Apple Announces Key Partnership with OpenAI

At WWDC 2024, Apple finally jumped into the AI race. As a part os its new Apple Intelligence offering, the Cupertino giant announced a partnership with OpenAI to bring ChatGPT to its products and services.

The partnership will see ChatGPT integrated into various experiences within iOS, iPadOS, and macOS operating systems. The integration, set to roll out later this year, will allow users to access ChatGPT's capabilities, including image and document understanding, without the need to switch between applications.

One of the key features of this integration is the ability for Siri, Apple's virtual assistant, to tap into ChatGPT's intelligence when necessary. Users will be prompted for permission before any questions, documents, or photos are sent to ChatGPT, and Siri will present the answers directly to the user.

Additionally, ChatGPT will be available in Apple's systemwide Writing Tools, enabling users to generate content for their writing projects. The integration also includes access to ChatGPT's image tools, allowing users to create images in various styles to complement their written content.

Apple and OpenAI have emphasized privacy protections throughout this partnership. When using ChatGPT within Siri or writing tools, your requests won't be stored by OpenAI, and your IP address will be obscured. You can also choose to connect your ChatGPT account to access additional features while still maintaining control over your data.

The deal is a validation of OpenAI's technology and a significant step forward for Apple in the AI arena. The integration, powered by GPT-4o, will be available for free to all users without the need to create an account. ChatGPT subscribers will have the option to connect their accounts and access paid features directly within the Apple experiences.
