OpenAI Raises $8.3B Toward Its $40B Fundraise

OpenAI has secured $8.3 billion in fresh capital at a $300 billion valuation, marking a major milestone in its broader $40 billion fundraising drive to supercharge AI growth.

Key Points

  • $8.3 billion secured now, with $40 billion target ongoing
  • Dragoneer led with $2.8 billion
  • Valuation tops $300 billion—double late‑2024 level
  • Funding fuels AI infrastructure rollouts and partnerships

This $8.3 billion tranche comes atop the $40 billion round first announced in March, led by SoftBank with commitments split into $10 billion upfront and a conditional $30 billion later this year.

The investor lineup reveals a shift toward Wall Street titans. The funding round attracted numerous new investors, including private equity firms Blackstone and TPG, along with mutual fund manager T. Rowe Price.

The standout investment came from Dragoneer Investment Group, which cut a $2.8 billion check. That represents roughly 10% of the San Francisco firm's total fund and highlights just how big the AI bet has become for institutional investors. Other major players in the round include Fidelity, Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Tiger Global, and Thrive Capital.

OpenAI's business keeps accelerating at an almost absurd pace. Annual revenue is now on pace for roughly $13 billion, jumping from $10 billion just three months ago. The company now serves five million paying business customers, up from three million recently.

All of this goes toward OpenAI’s sprawling Stargate initiative—a joint venture with SoftBank, Oracle, NVIDIA and others that aims to pump as much as $500 billion into AI infrastructure by 2029. That includes data centers in the U.S., UAE, and now Europe, where OpenAI is building a massive Norwegian facility of 100,000 NVIDIA GPUs powered entirely by renewables.
