TripAdvisor and AI search startup Perplexity are joining forces to improve how travelers find and book accommodations. The collaboration brings TripAdvisor's vast database of user-generated content into Perplexity's AI-powered search platform, offering travelers more detailed and trustworthy information when planning their stays.
Key Points:
- The integration gives Perplexity direct access to TripAdvisor's database of over one billion reviews and 11 million business listings across 43 global markets
- Users searching for hotels on Perplexity will now see curated summaries explaining why specific properties appear in their results, along with TripAdvisor ratings and amenity highlights
- The partnership will expand over three years to include restaurant information and travel experiences from Viator, TripAdvisor's tours and activities platform

When travelers search for hotels on Perplexity, they'll now get more than just a basic list of properties. Take a search for "hotels in Davos for a business trip" - the results include detailed context about why each hotel might be a good fit, pulling from TripAdvisor's wealth of user reviews and ratings. This marks a shift from Perplexity's previous approach of showing basic hotel information and website photos.

"As travelers increasingly seek direct, personalized and contextual insights backed by AI, our partnership with Perplexity is redefining how these journeys and experiences are planned," says Rahul Todkar, head of data and AI at TripAdvisor.
For TripAdvisor, this partnership builds on their existing AI initiatives, including their OpenAI integration for trip planning launched in mid-2023. The company reports encouraging early results, with TripAdvisor members who use their AI-powered itinerary features showing higher engagement and generating three times more revenue than average members.
While some might question whether a formal partnership is necessary given that Perplexity could potentially surface TripAdvisor content anyway, the direct integration offers unique advantages. According to TripAdvisor, the partnership provides Perplexity with deeper access to their content and the ability to surface recommendations based on user context and preferences in ways that wouldn't be possible through standard web crawling.
The integration is currently live on Perplexity's web platform, with mobile app features coming soon.
