What is Apple Intelligence?

What is Apple Intelligence?

Apple has just lifted the curtain on Apple Intelligence, its new personal intelligence system for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. With this, Apple promises to revolutionize how users write, express themselves, and manage everyday tasks. And true to Apple's style, it does this while setting a new standard for privacy in AI.

But, is it actually any good? We'd love to tell you, but many of these features are not yet available in the developer beta that we are currently testing. In the meantime, here are the top 6 features that Apple announced:

1. AI-Powered Writing Tools

A new systemwide feature called Writing Tools, helps you to rewrite, proofread, and summarize text across various apps. Whether you're crafting an email, polishing a blog post, or tidying up class notes, these tools help you feel more confident in your writing. You can adjust the tone, check grammar, and even get a concise summary of your text.

2. Genmoji and Image Playground

Apple Intelligence also brings fun and creativity to your images and emojis. With the new Image Playground, you can generate playful images in three styles: Animation, Illustration, or Sketch. You can make custom emojis, or "Genmojis," that perfectly capture the moment and your unique expression. You can also transform sketches into polished images using Image Wand.

3. A Better Photos & Videos Experience

The Photos app gets a boost too, with natural language search and the ability to find specific moments in video clips. The new Clean Up tool can remove distracting background objects without altering the subject. And with Memories, you can create custom stories by simply describing what you want to see.

4. Privacy and Security

Importantly, Apple Intelligence sets a new standard for privacy in AI. First, it has small models that run entirely on-device to process requests locally. And when more complex tasks require cloud processing, they have a new Private Cloud Compute that steps in while ensuring your data is never retained or exposed.

5. Siri Overhaul

Siri has leveled up with Apple Intelligence. It now understands you better, follows your train of thought, maintains context across requests and even allows you to type instead of speak. Siri can also take hundreds of new actions across apps, like finding book recommendations from a friend or checking on a parent's flight status. Siri can also tap into ChatGPT's expertise to answer your queries.

6. ChatGPT Integration

Yup, Apple is also integrating ChatGPT across its platforms. Siri can tap into ChatGPT's expertise when helpful, if the user permits. ChatGPT will be available in the systemwide Writing Tools to help generate content and images. ChatGPT users can connect their account if they want to access paid services.

Apple Intelligence is coming in beta this fal. It will initially be available in U.S. English, with more languages and features rolling out over the next year.
