WordPress.com Launches Free AI Website Builder for Beginners and Creators

WordPress.com has released a new AI website builder that strips away the hassle of web design in favor of something much more familiar: conversation. Starting today, users can spin up a full WordPress site by simply chatting with an AI assistant about what they want.

Key Points:

  • Simply describe your site idea in a chat to generate a full site
  • Tool is free to use for 30 prompts
  • Designed for blogs, portfolios, and small business sites—not e-commerce
  • Powered by both open-source and external AI models

WordPress is offering its AI tool for free, at least initially, giving users 30 prompts before requiring a hosting plan (Premium or Business). The goal is to lower the barrier to entry for personal websites and side projects.

Here’s how it works: you type a prompt like “Build a website for my Brooklyn-based coffee shop,” and the AI handles the rest—text, layout, and imagery included. You can then refine the site through additional chat prompts or jump into manual edits. The tool is only available for brand-new WordPress.com sites, and launching your site publicly requires a paid plan.

WordPress makes clear it can’t yet handle more complex sites—think online stores or apps with deep integrations. But for freelancers, bloggers, and small business owners just looking to get something live, it’s an appealing shortcut.

This is WordPress’s most direct attempt yet to modernize its user onboarding in an era when building a website no longer feels like a technical project, but a conversation. And in a crowded field of AI-first platforms, it’s betting that its open-source roots and existing ecosystem can still make it the go-to place to plant your flag online.
