For day 6 of its “12 Days of Shipmas” livestream event, OpenAI announced real-time video and screen sharing capabilities for ChatGPT's Advanced Voice, alongside a playful “Santa Mode” for the holidays.
Key points:
- ChatGPT can now see and respond to live video and screen sharing in Advanced Voice Mode,
- Rolling out to Teams, Plus, and Pro subscribers. Education and Enterprise users will gain access to video features early next year.
- A holiday-themed "Santa Mode" lets users converse with an AI Santa
Users can access the new video features through the Advanced Voice Mode button in the ChatGPT mobile app. There is now a toggle to enable the camera or screen sharing.
Product lead Kevin Weil and team members Michelle Qin, Jackie Shannon, and Rowan Zellers demonstrated practical applications. In the first demo, each person briefly introduced themselves to ChatGPT, and then the model was quizzed about their appearance. The team also highlighted potential use cases such as learning new skills and getting help while sharing your screen.
The new capability will begin to roll out to mobile users today, with global availability expected over the next week. Unfortunately, users in the EU, Switzerland, and a few other regions must wait for compliance updates.
Bonus feature: The livestream also introduced “Santa Mode,” which brings an AI Santa to ChatGPT for holiday season. It offers a whimsical break from productivity, with Santa ready to answer questions, tell Christmas jokes, or share festive stories. Users can access this mode via the snowflake icon in the app or desktop.
