ChatGPT for Mac Now Integrates with More Apps

On Day 11 of its "12 Days of Shipmas" event, OpenAI announced expanded support for ChatGPT to work with additional coding and note-taking apps on macOS through text or voice. This beta feature, accessible to Plus, Pro, Team, Enterprise, and Edu users, promises to streamline workflows by integrating ChatGPT deeper into your desktop experience.

ChatGPT's Work with Apps feature allows the AI to interact directly with compatible applications, such as coding and text editors, to provide smarter, context-aware assistance. For instance, when working with text editors like Notion or coding environments like VS Code, ChatGPT can include relevant content from open panes to tailor its responses. This capability enhances productivity by reducing the need for manual input and enabling more seamless collaboration.

Key Points:

  • ChatGPT now works with popular apps like Apple Notes, Notion, Quip, Xcode, and VS Code
  • Work with Apps now includes support for Advanced Voice mode
  • Rolling out to macOS today, with plans to expand to Windows and Free users in 2025

During today's livestream, OpenAI’s Kevin Weil, Justin Rushing, and John Nastos walked viewers through the new features. They highlighted ChatGPT’s ability to collaborate with apps like Warp for terminal commands or Notion for document drafting. By allowing ChatGPT to access app data (with user permission), tasks such as generating code, creating charts, and even drafting history tours become significantly more efficient.

"As our models get increasingly powerful, ChatGPT will more and more become agentic," Weil said. "ChatGPT will begin doing things for you."

For example, Justin Rushing, a member of the ChatGPT desktop team, demonstrated how ChatGPT’s integration with Warp simplifies coding queries by automatically understanding the app’s context, eliminating the need for manual input.

Meanwhile, John Nastos used ChatGPT within Xcode to troubleshoot Swift code, showcasing the seamless support for multiple IDEs, including VS Code, JetBrains tools, and MATLAB.

OpenAI also announced support for Advanced Voice Mode while use Working with Apps. This means you can talk with ChatGPT while navigating working in thrid party apps . In a lighthearted moment, the team demonstrated how the voice assistant, in a Santa persona, helped curate a holiday playlist.

Notably, today's release underscores OpenAI’s vision for ChatGPT as a proactive desktop assistant, capable of automating tasks and integrating deeply with user workflows. The feature is now live for macOS users with the ChatGPT app. For Windows users and those on the free tier, the wait extends into 2025.

Here is the list of supported apps at the time of writing:

  • Apple Notes
  • Notion
  • TextEdit
  • Quip
  • Xcode
  • VS Code (including Code, Code Insiders, VSCodium, Cursor, Windsurf)
  • Jetbrains (including Android Studio, IntelliJ, PyCharm, WebStorm,
  • PHPStorm, CLion, Rider, RubyMine, AppCode, GoLand, DataGrip)
  • TextEdit
  • Terminal

With just one day left in OpenAI’s Shipmas event, anticipation is building for tomorrow’s final reveal. Whatever tomorrow brings, it's clear that OpenAI is positioning ChatGPT to be more than just a chatbot—it's becoming a comprehensive digital assistant that adapts to how we naturally work and interact with our devices.
