Canadian AI startup Cohere is joining forces with Japanese tech giant Fujitsu to create powerful language models tailored for Japanese enterprises. The partnership aims to deliver secure AI solutions that meet the specific needs of global businesses operating in Japan.
One of the key developments from this partnership is the launch of an LLM tentatively named ‘Takane,’ which translates to ‘mountain peak’ in English. Takane will be based on Cohere’s Command R+, their most advanced and scalable LLM tailored for real-world business applications. This model promises to deliver verifiable accuracy, multilingual support, and robust capabilities for automating complex business tasks.
"We're bringing world-class AI capabilities to one of the most important enterprise markets globally," said Cohere CEO Aidan Gomez. "To make AI truly useful, we need to speak the language of business - both figuratively and literally."
The jointly developed AI services will be available through Fujitsu’s Data Intelligence PaaS and Fujitsu Uvance, offering private cloud deployments that cater to highly regulated industries such as finance, public sector, and research and development. This approach ensures that enterprises can leverage AI while maintaining stringent security and data privacy standards.
Fujitsu's CTO Vivek Mahajan explained the technical synergies: "We're combining our knowledge graph and AI auditing technologies with Cohere's secure enterprise models. This lets us offer AI solutions that are both powerful and compliant with corporate and legal regulations."
By integrating Cohere’s advanced Command R+ model with Fujitsu’s fine-tuning capabilities and expertise in Japanese language training, the partnership aims to deliver best-in-class LLMs that address the unique challenges faced by enterprises. These models will also incorporate retrieval-augmented generation technology to reduce hallucinations and provide accurate, reliable outputs.
This team-up reflects a growing trend of global AI partnerships. It follows moves by OpenAI, which recently opened a Tokyo hub, and Anthropic's collaboration with Singapore's SKT.
Takane is set to launch through Fujitsu's Kozuchi platform in September 2024.
