Disney is taking a major step into the future of entertainment technology by establishing a new division focused on AI and mixed reality. The Office of Technology Enablement (OTE) will coordinate how these emerging technologies are used across Disney's film, television, and theme park operations.
Jamie Voris, who previously served as chief technology officer at Walt Disney Studios for 14 years, will lead the new unit. He'll report directly to Disney Entertainment Co-Chairman Alan Bergman, highlighting the strategic importance of this initiative for the company.
Rather than taking control of existing projects, the new office will ensure Disney's various divisions are aligned in their approach to emerging tech. The team will start small but is expected to grow to about 100 employees, focusing on both the opportunities and potential risks of technologies like AI and extended reality.
"These advances will continue to impact consumer experiences, creative endeavors, and our business for years to come," Bergman told staff in an internal memo. The new unit underscores Disney's commitment to staying ahead of technological shifts while maintaining responsible development practices.
Disney's embrace of emerging tech comes at a critical moment for Hollywood, where the rise of AI is being met with both enthusiasm and unease. While some view AI as a potential disruptor to jobs, others—including Disney—are exploring its role in transforming post-production, visual effects, and even theme park experiences. Disney has been quietly building expertise in these areas, including bringing back Kyle Laughlin, a veteran with AR/VR experience, to lead R&D at Disney Imagineering.
While the OTE is launching immediately, it will take time to engage with teams across Disney's various divisions. The goal is to maintain Disney's creative legacy while embracing new technologies that could transform it for the age of intelligence.
Eddie Drake, previously head of technology at Marvel Studios, will take over Voris's former role as CTO of Walt Disney Studios.
