Google Debuts Deep Research, Merging Search Expertise with Agentic AI

Google is playing to its strengths with a new AI tool called Deep Research that combines the company's search expertise with the agentic AI capabilities of Gemini 2.0. The tool, launching today for Gemini Advanced subscribers, represents Google's strategic advantage in the AI race – its deep understanding of how to find and analyze web content.

Key Points:

  • Google launches Deep Research, a Gemini Advanced feature designed to streamline online research and create detailed, exportable reports.
  • Users can approve or edit multi-step research plans before Gemini scours the web and refines its findings.
  • Available exclusively to Gemini Advanced subscribers in English, Deep Research begins rolling out on desktop and mobile web today.

How it works: The process begins with users inputting a topic or question. Deep Research then drafts a research plan, which users can modify or approve. From there, the system navigates the web much like a human would – searching for information, analyzing findings, and initiating new searches based on discovered content. The process culminates in a detailed report that includes source links and key insights, potentially reducing hours of manual research to minutes.

Who is it for? Designed for professionals, students, and entrepreneurs, Deep Research is an ideal assistant for tackling tasks like competitor analysis, industry benchmarking, or academic preparation. Users can export the reports directly into Google Docs, ensuring seamless integration with existing workflows.

Availability: Deep Research is currently available only to Gemini Advanced subscribers in English, with plans to expand to the Gemini mobile app in early 2025. To access it, users can select "Gemini 1.5 Pro with Deep Research" from the model dropdown.

Big picture: This release comes alongside Google's unveiling of Gemini 2.0. Although still in preview, Gemini 2.0 signals Google’s ambition to make AI increasingly agentic—capable of acting on users’ behalf to complete complex tasks.

With Deep Research, Google is leaning into its expertise in search – a domain where the company's two decades of experience may prove decisive in the evolving AI landscape.
