Google DeepMind’s Veo 2 Brings AI Video Generation to YouTube Shorts

Google DeepMind has added Veo 2, its latest video generation model, directly into YouTube Shorts via the Dream Screen feature. This will allow you to generate AI-powered video clips and backgrounds with a simple text prompt directly in the app. The feature is now available in the U.S., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, with plans for a broader rollout.

Key Points:

  • Veo 2 enables full video generation in addition to AI-generated backgrounds.
  • Creators can specify styles, effects, and cinematic aesthetics for more control.
  • The tool uses SynthID watermarks to indicate AI-generated content.
  • Launches first in four countries, with expansion planned.

YouTube first introduced Dream Screen last year, allowing creators to add AI-generated backgrounds to Shorts. Today's rollout introduces two key functionalities that streamline the video creation process. Creators can now generate video backgrounds by accessing Dream Screen through the Shorts camera's Green Screen feature. Additionally, they can create standalone clips by using the media picker's Create option, with the ability to customize the length of the generated content.

According to Dina Berrada, YouTube’s Director of Product for Generative AI, Veo 2 delivers more realistic and high-quality output by improving its understanding of real-world physics and human movement. The model can also apply different visual effects, lenses, and cinematic styles, giving creators more creative flexibility.

Importantly, Google says any AI generated content will have their digital watermarking SynthID technology embedded in it, and have clear labels indicating it is AI generated.

If you're a creator in supported region, you can start using Veo 2 by selecting Dream Screen within the Shorts camera.
