Meta Announces LlamaCon, Its First Developer Conference for AI

Meta is launching LlamaCon, its first developer conference focused on generative AI, as the company doubles down on its open-source strategy and faces growing competition in the AI space.

Key Points:

  • The event will highlight updates on Meta’s open-source Llama AI models.
  • It arrives months ahead of Meta Connect, which will take place in September.
  • Meta is investing up to $80 billion in AI this year, aiming to lead in open AI models.

Meta's announcement of LlamaCon marks its latest push to dominate open-source AI development. The conference, scheduled for April 29, will focus on helping developers build applications using Meta's Llama family of AI models.

in case you need us, we’ll be staring at this until september 17. mark your calendars for LlamaCon (april 29) and Connect (september 17-18) and get more details here: https://www.meta.com/blog/connect-2025-llamacon-save-the-date/

The timing is significant as Meta commits $80 billion to AI projects in 2025, including new hires and data centers. The company's open-source approach has already attracted major users like Goldman Sachs, AT&T, and DoorDash, with technology partners including Nvidia and Snowflake building additional tools for the platform.

However, Meta faces new challenges from competitors like DeepSeek, whose open-source models reportedly rival Meta's upcoming Llama version. CEO Mark Zuckerberg remains optimistic, stating during Meta's Q4 2024 earnings call that "this very well could be the year when Llama and open source become the most advanced and widely used AI models."

The company plans to release several new Llama models in the coming months, including versions with reasoning capabilities and multimodal features. LlamaCon will serve as a platform to showcase these developments ahead of Meta's annual Connect conference in September.
