Microsoft has unveiled Copilot Pages, heralding what they say is a new era in AI-driven digital workspaces. Touted as "the first new digital artifact for the AI age," Copilot Pages aims to bridge the gap between AI-generated insights and human collaboration, potentially reshaping how teams interact with AI.
One of the biggest challenges with today's AI assistants is that the output is often buried away in chats. Now, when having a conversation with Copilot, you can choose to generate a Copilot Page—a persistent, editable document that stores an AI response.
Essentially, Copilot Pages allow users to convert AI-generated content from ephemeral chat responses into live canvases. Teams can work together on these pages, prompting Copilot collectively to refine and expand content, effectively creating a new workflow that Microsoft describes as "multiplayer, human-to-AI-to-human collaboration."
Despite the grand introduction however, Copilot Pages are fundamentally .loop files. This technology underpins the dynamic nature of Pages, allowing for seamless updates and real-time collaboration. The difference lies in the enhanced AI integration and collaborative features that Copilot Pages offer, aimed at creating a more fluid and interactive work environment.
For IT administrators, Copilot Pages introduces new considerations. The pages are stored in user-owned SharePoint Embedded containers, counting against the tenant's SharePoint quota. Admins can control access and sharing through existing file-sharing settings and Conditional Access policies.
Microsoft is rolling out Copilot Pages to Microsoft 365 Copilot customers starting today, with general availability expected later in September 2024. The company also plans to extend this feature to the over 400 million users with access to the free Microsoft Copilot in the coming weeks.
