OpenAI has inked another content partnership deal—this time with media giant Hearst. Like its other media partnerships, OpenAI will gain access to Hearst's extensive newspaper and magazine content for its AI products.
The agreement covers over 40 newspapers, including the Houston Chronicle and San Francisco Chronicle, as well as more than 20 magazine brands such as Esquire, Cosmopolitan, and ELLE.
Hearst Magazines President Debi Chirichella views this partnership as a way to "evolve the future of magazine content." Meanwhile, Jeff Johnson, President of Hearst Newspapers, emphasized the importance of professional journalism being "at the heart of all AI products."
Importantly, all Hearst content integrated into OpenAI’s products will include citations and direct links to original sources. The financial terms of the deal remain undisclosed, but it's believed Hearst will be compensated with both financial payments and credits to utilize OpenAI's technologies.
This deal follows similar partnerships OpenAI has formed with other major publishers, including Condé Nast, Axel Springer, and News Corp. However, while some publishers are embracing these partnerships, others are taking legal action. The New York Times, for instance, has sued OpenAI and Microsoft for alleged copyright infringement, arguing that the AI's use of its content threatens its business model.
