Lionsgate, the studio behind blockbuster franchises like "John Wick" and "The Hunger Games," has partnered with AI startup Runway to develop a custom AI model trained on Lionsgate's vast library of films and TV shows.
This first-of-its-kind deal aims to integrate AI technology into various stages of film production. Lionsgate plans to use the AI tools for tasks ranging from storyboarding to creating background elements and special effects.
Michael Burns, Lionsgate's vice chairman, sees the partnership as a way to enhance creativity while potentially saving millions in production costs. "We view AI as a great tool for augmenting, enhancing and supplementing our current operations," Burns stated.
The collaboration comes at a time when Hollywood is grappling with the implications of AI in content creation. Recent industry-wide strikes highlighted concerns about the technology's impact on jobs and creative control.
Cristóbal Valenzuela, CEO of Runway, emphasized that their goal is to empower artists and studios. "We're committed to giving artists, creators and studios the best and most powerful tools to augment their workflows and enable new ways of bringing their stories to life," he said.
While the full capabilities of the AI model are still developing, Lionsgate expects it to be particularly beneficial for lower-budget productions. Brianna Domont, who oversees visual effects for Lionsgate's motion picture group, called the technology a potential "game-changer" for films with limited resources.
The partnership also opens the door for future licensing opportunities. Lionsgate and Runway are exploring the possibility of offering the AI model to other entertainment companies, potentially reshaping how the industry approaches content creation and intellectual property.
