Uber says it will introduce an AI assistant to help its drivers navigate the transition to electric vehicles. The new AI assistant will be powered by OpenAI's GPT-4o technology and is set to debut in the US early next year, and then expanding internationally later on. Initially, the assistant will focus exclusively on answering drivers' questions related to electric vehicles, including where to find charging stations, how to access incentives, and recommendations on which EV to consider. However, Uber has bigger plans for this feature, with aims to broaden its capabilities by early 2025.
CEO Dara Khosrowshahi highlighted the rapid adoption of electric vehicles among Uber drivers, noting that they are transitioning to EVs five times faster than the average motorist across the U.S., Canada, and Europe. "In London, nearly 30% of all miles driven on Uber are now electric," Khosrowshahi remarked. With over 180,000 drivers making the switch to electric vehicles each month in North America and Europe, Uber's commitment to sustainability is taking tangible shape.
The AI assistant will be accessible via the home screen of the Uber driver app, allowing drivers to communicate with it using both text and voice commands. It will offer personalized guidance based on each driver's location and available government incentives, tailored to their specific city. While the initial rollout will feature text-based interaction, future versions will allow drivers to speak directly to the assistant, with responses delivered audibly—providing a safer, hands-free experience.
Beyond technology, Uber is also launching an EV mentorship program, aimed at connecting experienced electric vehicle drivers with those considering the transition. This mentorship initiative is designed to provide first-hand insights and address practical questions that arise in moving from gas-powered to electric vehicles.
The AI assistant rollout is part of a broader set of climate initiatives revealed at Uber’s Go-Get Zero event. The ride-hailing company is expanding its "Uber Green" offering, allowing riders in more than 40 cities worldwide, including New York, Los Angeles, and Paris, to request EV-only rides. Additionally, Uber will host pop-up events in cities like London, Los Angeles, and Miami, giving passengers the opportunity to experience electric vehicles like the Lotus Eletre and Rivian R1.
