ChatGPT Desktop App Now Available for All Mac Users

OpenAI's ChatGPT desktop app is now available for all macOS users. The app, which was first announced during OpenAI's Spring Updates event in May, allows users to quickly access ChatGPT by pressing Option + Space. This shortcut will familiar to Mac power users who are accustomed to launching Spotlight Search with Command + Space.

Before you get too excited, you should know that the new voice engine that OpenAI demoed in their initial announcement is still not yet available in this release. However, the desktop app brings lots of little conveniences that allow you to interact more naturally with AI without leaving your flow.

When activated, ChatGPT appears as an overlay on the screen. Users can chat about anything on their display. The app supports file uploads, which allow users to discuss documents and images directly within the interface. It also has a cool feature where you can capture a screenshot of the entire screen or a specific window with a simple click.

This desktop app comes ahead of Apple's planned integration of ChatGPT into its operating systems later this year via Apple Intelligence. Apple users can expect to see ChatGPT features in various aspects of iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, including Siri and writing tools.

Update from OpenAI regarding the delay in releasing advanced voice mode, video, and screensharing capabilties

We're sharing an update on the advanced Voice Mode we demoed during our Spring Update, which we remain very excited about:

We had planned to start rolling this out in alpha to a small group of ChatGPT Plus users in late June, but need one more month to reach our bar to launch. For example, we’re improving the model’s ability to detect and refuse certain content. We’re also working on improving the user experience and preparing our infrastructure to scale to millions while maintaining real-time responses.

As part of our iterative deployment strategy, we'll start the alpha with a small group of users to gather feedback and expand based on what we learn. We are planning for all Plus users to have access in the fall. Exact timelines depend on meeting our high safety and reliability bar. We are also working on rolling out the new video and screen sharing capabilities we demoed separately, and will keep you posted on that timeline.

ChatGPT’s advanced Voice Mode can understand and respond with emotions and non-verbal cues, moving us closer to real-time, natural conversations with AI. Our mission is to bring these new experiences to you thoughtfully.
