Google's Gemini AI is now available as a dedicated app for iPhone, offering the simplest way yet for iOS users to access Google’s AI assistant. Available now on the App Store, the app features Gemini Live, an interactive, real-time conversation mode that’s a first for iPhone owners.
Why it matters: Gemini’s new iPhone app aims to make Google's flagship AI assistant easily accessible, nudging users to integrate it into their daily habits. One tap is all it takes to start a conversation, giving Google a shot at becoming your go-to AI assistant.
What’s new: While most of the functionality is the same as the Gemini section of the Google app, there is one feature to highlight:
- Gemini Live for iOS: Gemini Live allows users to have a more dynamic chat—you can interrupt, switch topics, or just chat casually, much like talking to a friend. This is Google's equivalent for ChatGPT's advanced voice mode. It’s even integrated into the iPhone’s Dynamic Island, making it visually present while in use.
Zoom out: The launch comes as part of Google’s broader push to put AI everywhere, on every platform, as competition with Apple and other AI players intensifies. However, like other non-Siri AI assistants on iPhones, Gemini can't change system settings or access other apps directly—but it does work smoothly with Google’s ecosystem. You can ask for directions, and Gemini will pull up Google Maps, or you can request a song, and it’ll launch YouTube Music.
